PostSubject: I have a question.   Tue 14 Mar 15:11

Im wondering if somebody would help me about the English grammar.

Here is a conversation from a textbook.
A: Look-what do you say you, Lisa and I start up a car pool? We live so close, and wed save a lot on gas.
B: Thats true. And with three people in the car wed be entitled to lower bridge toll rates.
A: And wed have each others company on the long drive in.

I dont get the last in. Why do you need in? I feel on the drive makes sense.

Thank you very much.
Surprised

I copy and paste Tim's answer :

Mayumi is quite right that "on the long drive" would make sense -
although I
would prefer "for the long drive", which is less ambiguous. "On the
drive"
usually means "on the driveway" (meaning the little path in front of
your
house where you park your car), as opposed to the "on the journey".

However, "on the long drive in" is fine too. "The long drive out" would
mean
a drive away towards somewhere faraway, whereas "the long drive in"
means
the long drive into the city (or the town centre, or something
similar).

I hope that helps!

Tim
